“She’s been perfect,” Said Popovich after signing the 37 year old, six time WNBA all-star as a FULL TIME PAID assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. With years with their sister league team’s San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA under her belt, he seemed confident in her for more than just a media flurry.
“Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.” – Coach Popovich
He doesn’t speak about how proud he is that he’s hired a woman or even hint to the fact. He speaks only ever about what she can do for the organization, and I applaud him for that.
“She knows when to talk, and she knows when to shut up. That’s as simple as you can put it, and a lot of people don’t figure that out. … She knows how to do it, and our players really respond to her. She’s just a natural.” – Coach Popovich
Now I’m sad to admit that I’ve only recently begun to follow basketball (waiting for football season). But football season has arrived, I care as much as ever if not more for basketball and the recent big moves are helping extremely. But before I go for god knows how long again, I’ll leave you with a quote from Hammon herself.
“I know Coach Pop has made it very clear to me that I’m being hired because of my basketball IQ and because I’m qualified,” “He said, ‘It just so happens you are a woman, but I’m hiring you because of your IQ and your personal relationship skills.’ I’m just grateful that they see something in me that fits in with them and their organization.”
